Here’s a checklist of the bare essentials you must have at the barn
when you buy a horse.
Stuff you will need
Grooming kit:
Nylon or Leather Halter (2) (for Nylon you will need break
away leather strips near the buckle area just in case the horse needs to break
away)
Lead rope
(Cotton)
Saddle
Saddle pad: Buy two so you can wash one after
you use it.
Girth (Neoprine)
Bridle &
bit
Tack
cleaning stuff: Saddle soap, leather conditioner, a sponge and a
small bucket.
Buckets:
Three will come in handy—for feeding, water, and bathing.
Mucking out
gear: a muck bucket or wheelbarrow, 2 pitchforks and a broom.
Shipping boots: Essential if you
want to take your pony somewhere in a trailer.
Feed: Find out what kind
of feed your new pony eats and have some in the feed room before she arrives. If
you switch her feed do it gradually over two weeks.
Hay:
Find out what kind of hay your pony/horse is used to because some
horses are allergic to alfalfa. Try to get a couple of bails of hay from the
seller to and mix it with your hay. Mix it gradually over a one week period
