So you finally got your wish and your new horse or pony is going to be arriving soon. Do you have all the gear you’ll need when your pony or horse steps off the trailer?

Here’s a checklist of the bare essentials you must have at the barn when you buy a horse.

Stuff you will need

Grooming kit:

Nylon or Leather Halter (2) (for Nylon you will need break away leather strips near the buckle area just in case the horse needs to break away)
Lead rope (Cotton)
Saddle

Saddle pad:
Buy two so you can wash one after you use it.

Girth (Neoprine)
Bridle & bit

Tack cleaning stuff: Saddle soap, leather conditioner, a sponge and a small  bucket.

Buckets: Three will come in handy—for feeding, water, and bathing.
Mucking out gear: a muck bucket or wheelbarrow, 2 pitchforks and a broom.

Shipping boots: Essential if you want to take your pony somewhere in a trailer.

Feed: Find out what kind of feed your new pony eats and have some in the feed room before she arrives. If you switch her feed do it gradually over two weeks.

Hay: Find out what kind of hay your pony/horse is used to because some horses are allergic to alfalfa. Try to get a couple of bails of hay from the seller to and mix it with your hay. Mix it gradually over a one week period
